Label TextRemington dramatically interpreted the subject of the cowboy on a bucking horse in several sculptures. The subject exemplifies the idea of human efforts to tame the wildness of nature. In this sculpture Remington portrayed the inherent dangers of the western landscape. The horse and rider both pull away from the small, but deadly, rattlesnake.

ProvenancePurchased May 4, 1962 through (Wally Findlay Galleries, Palm Beach, Florida) by H.J. Lutcher Stark [1887-1965][1]; transferred December 23, 1964 to the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation; accessioned to the Stark Museum of Art | 1. The sculpture was purchased with The Lutcher and Moore Lumber Company Funds, but was transferred to the Foundation ownership on December 23, 1964.
