Label TextRemington painted this work as an illustration for a specific passage in a novel he wrote, "The Way of an Indian." The book tells a story of a Cheyenne chief, whose death signals the end of an era. The painting echoes that theme in its depiction of the Indian warrior, with his doomed infant son, at the edge of a precipice in a cold and barren landscape.
