Label TextLeon Gaspard painted To the Christmas Dance in Taos, New Mexico. He had immigrated to Taos from his native Russia through France. Throughout his career, he created joyous images of communities of people. In Russia, he portrayed peasants and ethnic groups. In New Mexico, he found inspiration in the native peoples of the Pueblos. To the Christmas Dance is a variation on a composition he often used. A procession winds its way among snowdrifts through a towering forest. Leiba Schulman was the artist’s birth name. He changed his last name to Gaspard to obscure his Jewish background, which restricted his opportunities in Russia.
