Label TextIn Blowing Sand, Ellis depicts the atmospheric condition that created the distinctive Southwestern landscape. He portrays the wind by showing its effects in swirling the dry sand. In the distance we see the geologic features of Monument Valley on the Utah-Arizona state line. The landscape formations have been shaped by the effects of wind, biting sand, and erosion. Painters like Ellis helped make Monument Valley known throughout the world as the characteristic landscape of the West. The 1939 movie Stage Coach takes place in this landscape.
