Label Text"These canoes are always placed on wooden supports, suspended in the branches of trees, or placed upon islolated rocks in the river, to keep them beyond the reach of ravenous animals." Kane, Wanderings, Chapter XIII The burial customs of the Indians intrigued Kane, and he made several sketches of the ceremonial canoes placed on supports which were used as graves.
