Label TextFarny’s depiction of Indians departing on a buffalo hunt has a still, solemn beauty. Yet it is haunting. The shadowed snow and the grey of the skies lend bleakness to the scene. When Farny painted this work, the days of the bison hunt were past. By this time, bison were almost extinct and the Plains Indians lived on reservations. The mood of the painting evokes the end of a way of life.
