Label TextThis painting illustrated the western novel Judith of Blue Lake Ranch by Jackson Gregory, published in 1919. Dunton portrayed a scene in which the novel’s heroine rode a wild horse. She proved to the disbelieving cowboys that she could handle a horse. She also proved that she could manage the ranch. The novel and the illustration presented a woman as active and courageous. This characterization reflected societal changes in the early twentieth century. Women took on new roles and sought equality.
