Label TextHennings created an image of beauty inspired by a New Mexico seasonal occurrence. Having studied in Munich, the artist absorbed influences from the German variation of Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, which emphasized stylized curvilinear forms. He applied that aesthetic to the American landscape, using the sunflower stalks to make a graceful pattern on the picture plane. The stalks both reveal and veil the fields, mountains and sky.
