Label TextBierstadt made many studies of mountains for his paintings. He wanted to portray sublime subjects. He traveled not only in the American West, but also in the eastern part of the United States and Europe. An inscription on the back of this work identified it as Mount Adams in the White Mountains, which is in New Hampshire. The artist portrayed the mountain as a series of flat planes of shaded color.
