Label TextMany Euro-Americans in the nineteenth century believed that the Indian was a vanishing race. Stanley painted an allegory of this idea. He depicted representatives of different Indian tribes and of diverse ages from infant to old age, all at the brink of the ocean with the sun setting in the distance.
