Label Text:Seeking new subjects, Moran undertook a trip to Mexico in 1883. He sailed from New York to Cuba, then from Cuba to Vera Cruz, Mexico. The one sketch he made of the Gulf of Mexico from this trip shows tranquil water, but perhaps he heard tales of storms on the Gulf. When he returned to his studio, he painted scenes of his journey and this dramatic seascape portraying the power and sublime beauty of the Gulf of Mexico.
