Label TextIn his Taos paintings, Hennings often combines strong figure painting with landscape settings. In his sensitive portrayal of an Indian woman, he uses the foliage as a background screen. Yet the color palette of whites, greens, and rosy hues unites the figure with the landscape. Both the artist’s choice of colors and the woman’s work bag unite her with the land. Because of the strong Spanish presence in the Southwest for centuries, many Native peoples, including Juanita, the woman represented here, bore Spanish names.
