Label TextRemington drew this sketch to illustrate Theodore Roosevelt’s book Ranch Life and the Hunting-Trail. Roosevelt wrote about his experiences as a rancher in the Dakota Territory. In the opening chapter, he described cowboys. “Singly, or in twos or threes, they gallop their wiry little horses down the street.” Roosevelt’s words helped create the concept of the cowboy. He said, “they are as hardy and self-reliant as any men who ever breathed.” He wrote, “Peril and hardship . . . never dim their reckless eyes nor break their bearing of defiant self-confidence.”
