Label TextSharp built a home on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana so he could live near the Indian subjects he wanted to portray. At the turn of the century the United States government required Indians to live on reservations and restricted their observance of traditional ways of life. Scenes like this would have been rare, but Sharp was able to see instances of traditional life, especially during the annual Crow Fair.
Provenance(Joseph Sartor Galleries, Dallas, Texas); purchased March 8, 1957 by H.J. Lutcher Stark [1887-1965]; bequeathed September 2, 1965 to the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation; accessioned to the Stark Museum of Art
