Label TextFechin developed his art from dual influences. He drew upon both his native Russian and immigrant American experiences. Born in Kazan, Russia, Fechin moved to the United States and found inspiring subjects in New Mexico. He developed a style with an expressionistic application of paint and bold colors. Yet he retained an allegiance to depicting the figure, as in this depiction of Joe with Drum. He renders Joe with wrapped braids and feathers of traditional Indian attire.
