Descriptionuncolored
Label TextThis print shows the design before coloring. The printmakers covered a metal plate with wax. In the etching process, they used a special tool to draw lines into the wax, exposing the metal. The printmakers also used the aquatint process. Instead of a tool to cut lines, for aquatint, the printmakers used a powdery substance that resulted in small dots. They dipped the plate in acid, which made linear grooves and incised dots where the metal was exposed. The ink pooled in the grooves and dots. The printmakers pressed paper against the plate with pressure. The black inked design resulted.
