Label TextAnderson used his woodcarvings to inject humor into Western art. His rough-hewn style of carving matched the broad caricatures he created. In this work, he depicted a common occurrence in the Southwest. A tourist seeks a photograph of an “authentic” Indian. Yet Anderson’s depiction of the jewelry-laden sightseer raises a question. Who is the more exotic character here?
ProvenanceH.J. Lutcher Stark [1887-1965]; bequeathed September 2, 1965 to the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation; accessioned to the Stark Museum of Art
