Label TextHennings used this pencil sketch of the Mission San José de Laguna to prepare a major painting, Laguna Pueblo Mission Church. He planned his composition on paper by drawing the church and the sky. Next he drew a grid over the sketch. The grid would help him transfer the scene to a larger canvas. Hennings may have made other preliminary drawings for this painting. The final work shows that Hennings made changes. He shifted the perspective on the architectural features, omitted the ladder, and added human figures.
