Label TextLeon Gaspard, born in Russia, sought inspiration throughout the world. In 1921, he traveled from the United States to Asia. In China, he visited the ancient city known today as Suzhou. His painting of “Soochow in Winter” depicts the folk architecture clustered around a city canal. He painted from a high viewpoint, perhaps a bridge. In the gray winter light, the slabs of snow create patches of light on the house and boat roofs.
