Label TextAfter Buffalo Bill had success with his Wild West, other entrepreneurs organized traveling shows with western themes. Cowboys could earn a salary and see other parts of the country and world. Dunton’s painting illustrated a fictional story about one. Emmet F. Hart wrote about two cowboys who joined Doc Carson’s Wild West Show for an adventure. Their troupe had Indians, cowboys, horses, mules, cows, and “six head of real buffalo.” The narrative contrasts the cowboys with “The Idle Rich” (which was the title of Hart’s story). During the show, a buffalo got loose and charged the audience. The cowboy hero saves the Eastern socialite and dissolves her haughtiness.
