Label TextThe portrait shows Chief Keokuk with his son Mu-sen-wont. It portrays the importance of Keokuk as a leader. In the McKenney-Hall publication, the essay on Keokuk is one of the longer chapters. It gives a history of his people, as well as a biography of Keokuk. The text described Keokuk “as one of the most distinguished of his race.” It praised his “courage, prudence, and eloquence.” Keokuk did not engage in war with the United States, and that might have enhanced the positive perception of his qualities.
