Label TextGrafton Tyler Brown is recognized as the first African American professional artist to portray the American West. He moved to California from Pennsylvania in 1858 and began his career as a lithographer, working for a company that made views of mining towns and maps. He next established his own lithographic firm. After additional success he developed his career as an easel painter of landscapes of California and the Northwest. In 1886 he visited Yellowstone National Park. He continued to paint views of the Park in the following years. In this painting of Old Faithful, Brown depicted the Shack Hotel, which accommodated tourists between 1885 and 1894.
