Label TextArtist Ernest Martin Hennings and his new bride Helen journeyed to Europe and Morocco for a sixteen-month honeymoon. Hennings used the travel to inspire new subjects and approaches for his paintings. He painted this work in the sunny hill town of St. Jeannet in Provence. Hennings depicted the French woman wearing her traditional Provencal clothing, such as the straw hat, bright scarf, and skirt with apron. The artist’s daughter later wrote about the subject. “My mother told me that this peasant woman brought her fresh orange blossoms each morning when she came to pose for my Dad.”
