DescriptionYei figure pictorial. Ceremonial pattern with red, yellow, black, white, gray, green and orange yarn colors. Red is commercial dye.
Label TextThe making of Yei weavings appears to have been counter to traditional Navajo beliefs. Representation of Navajo “Holy People” in permanent form was not acceptable. A few weavers in the early twentieth century broke with tradition, perhaps with the encouragement of traders. Religious prohibitions are avoided by changes in design.
