Label TextHennings’s model projects an Indian who is both traditional and modern. He has the wrapped braids and a white blanket of his Native heritage. Yet his bright coral shirt is manufactured and is set off by a necktie. He is smoking, but it is a modern cigarette, not an historic pipe. His gesture indicates a time of relaxation. The artist may have been inspired by Western paintings he had seen of cowboys resting in their saddles with cigarettes.
