Label TextRemington began his artistic career as an illustrator. He traveled to the Southwest to make drawings and write stories for eastern magazines. He accompanied the United States Army and often portrayed military scenes. He made The Well in the Desert for a book he produced titled Drawings. It contained reproductions of over sixty of his works of art. The scene depicts a moment when the soldiers gather at a precious resource, water in the desert.
