Label TextTo create a wood block print, Baumann first sketched an idea. He then planned each color separately. He sketched the first color areas on paper with a graphite pencil or charcoal. He placed the paper over a wood block and traced the image in pencil with transfer paper beneath it. The artist then carved the design into the wood block by cutting out the areas he did not want to print. He made a separate block for each color. He then printed each color block on a piece of paper. The final print is the result of the planned mix of colors.
