Label TextFechin approached making sculpture in a different way from painting. When he painted, he worked from a model and portrayed a specific person. In his wood carved sculptures, he worked from imagination and the material. The figure emerged from the act of carving. Fechin used the grain of the wood to develop features. His daughter wrote, “All the woodwork my father did was really for his own personal enjoyment.”
