Label TextRemington drew a preliminary sketch for this painting and described the subject, “Being a cavalry column – suddenly fired on from opposite bluff – the officer raising hand indicating ‘Halt -- & bugler blowing – white and Indian scouts in center and all the troop horses twisting back on their bits. It gives good chance for action of rather unconventional form.” He sent this to a patron. Remington wrote, “If you like it, return the sketch and I will attempt it.” Benjamin Walworth Arnold must have liked the idea, because Remington painted this canvas.
