Label TextDunton’s painting portrays a cowboy with a small herd of horses. For work with cattle, cowboys needed access to more than one horse. Cattle outfits maintained a herd of horses, sometimes called a remuda. The cowboy who managed horses on the trail drive or for the outfit was the wrangler. This cowboy talks with two men, in uniform dress. Perhaps the wrangler brought horses to sell. Unfortunately, the story behind this painting is not known. No publication has been found. The artist wrote on the back “Don’t recall for whom.” The title is traditional, but has no authorized source. What do you think the story is?
