Label TextPaul Kane wanted to record the western landscape and the Indian peoples before they changed. In 1845, he traveled around the Great Lakes. Next, from 1846 to 1848, he journeyed from Toronto to the Pacific coast and back. On both trips, he sketched in pencil, watercolors, and oil paints along the way. He made notes for a book he later published. Scholars believe Kane painted this portrait in 1845 at Manitowaning, Ontario, Canada. Indians from around the region had gathered at that village to wait for supplies.
