Label TextThe bison is now the national mammal of the United States. Congress approved a bill to designate the honor. President Obama signed it into law on May 9, 2016. The act notes “the historical, cultural, and economic significance of the North American bison.” Artists have celebrated the bison. John James Audubon portrayed “this noble animal.” His text declared that it was decidedly the most important four-legged animal.
