Label TextThis print is part of a portfolio, Kiowa Indian Art. The artists were young Kiowa art students. They studied at the University of Oklahoma. These artists developed a style of figurative painting. The work features sharp outlines and flat planes of color. Lois Smoky was the only female artist in the group called the Kiowa Five, later expanded to the Kiowa Six. In the Southern Plains tradition, women usually only painted geometric designs. Lois Smoky broke tradition by studying art and by painting figures. Her art often featured subjects of women and children.
