Label TextReports of a mountain with a cross naturally carved into its sloping side seemed to give a divine blessing upon the American landscape. William Henry Jackson photographed the mountain in 1873, having climbed to document it while on an expedition. His photograph inspired Moran to travel to Colorado the following year to make watercolor sketches that became the basis of this glorious chromolithograph.
