Label TextCharles Marion Russell, who has become the epitome of a western artist, placed a self-portrait in this drawing of mules and wagons, traveling in a vast landscape. He looks back toward a scene that will soon be a memory. Charles Marion Russell drew this image as part of a letter to fellow artist Philip R. Goodwin. He told Goodwin about a two-week “fine trip” he took, riding along with a freight hauler. He characterized the freighter John Matheson as one of the last of his type. Russell valued the West of the past and idealized it in his art. Connect with Michael Stone’s Western Art #2.
