DescriptionUnfinished painting.Label TextThis painting was one of several left unfinished at the artist’s death. In the 1930s, Johnson began visiting his cousin who had a dude ranch near Cody, Wyoming. Johnson had a log studio on the ranch so he could spend summers there painting. The Rimrock Ranch was one of many western ranches that developed to serve visitors on vacation. The guests, usually Easterners, came to the ranch to experience western life. Cowboys would take them on trail rides and to rodeos. Dude ranches provided Westerners with a way to make an income from their land and animals. The dude ranch gave Johnson romantic subjects he could paint.
