Label TextHenry Inman copied Charles Bird King’s portraits of Indians to prepare illustrations for a book by Thomas L. McKenney. McKenney wanted to write a history of Indian tribes, using the Indian Gallery portraits as illustrations. Since the portraits belonged to the government, it was necessary to have copies made that could stay at the printer’s establishment to serve as models for the lithographs. Inman, an accomplished portraitist and printmaker, produced copies that seem to have surpassed King’s paintings in excellence of modeling.
