Label TextCharles Deas (pronounced days) portrayed Indian riders descending through a narrow passage of a wild and untamed landscape. In his view, common in his time, Indians were identified with the characteristics of that landscape. In the years since he painted this work, Deas’ pigments appear to have darkened, making his figures blend into the natural setting even more than initially intended.
