Label TextWill James painted a scene of rest and reciprocal aid. Two horses stand nearly nose to tail under a shading tree. Each can use its tail to flick away insects from the other’s face. Two birds perch on the back of one horse. The birds can make a meal of those flitting insects. Admiration for horses was a theme of James’s art and writings. In his award-winning book “Smoky,” he wrote, “To me, the horse is man’s greatest, most useful, faithful, and powerful friend.”
