DescriptionMatte decoration of rain bird motif taken from Hopi pottery, polished body.
Label TextMaria Martinez said, “Black goes with everything.” An archaeologist asked the Martinezes to make black pots like pieces found in ruins. Maria and Julian Martinez revived and perfected the method of making black-on-black ware. They developed a process of removing the oxygen when firing the pots. That produced the black color.
