Label TextIn this painting of a church at Santo Domingo Pueblo on Feast Day in August, 1919, Sloan conveyed the lively and yet disparate intersection of cultures in early twentieth century New Mexico. The painting contains representations of the Spanish heritage, Indian presence, and the Anglo tourists and new residents. Sloan, a social realist, painted primarily in Philadelphia and New York, but in 1919, he began summering in Santa Fe. Church Service with its bold brushwork relates to his “Ashcan” style of painting, yet also indicates the new inspiration he found in New Mexico. The painting includes a portrait of Sloan’s first wife Dolly in the foreground.
