Label TextCurtis documented houses made by the native Californians. In his books he often described materials and methods. In a letter to a friend, his wording was harsher. He noted that “practically all Indians suffered seriously at the hands of the settlers and government.” Yet Curtis found that “the Indians of this state suffered beyond comparison.” He wrote about attacks by settlers. These attacks caused many Californian Indians to be without homes. “Thus the Indians became a people without even camping places which they could call their own.”
