Label TextThe President of the United States wrote the Foreword to “The North American Indian." Theodore Roosevelt and Curtis were good friends. Curtis had taken portraits of the President’s children. He also photographed Alice Roosevelt’s wedding. Roosevelt admired Curtis. The president believed that “the Indian is on the point of passing away.” He cited Curtis as able to preserve a complete record. “He is a close observer, whose qualities of mind and body fit him to make his observations out in the field.” He concluded the Foreword by writing, “Mr. Curtis . . . is rendering a real and great service . . . to the world of scholarship everywhere.” Volume Ten is open to “Tenaktak Wedding Guests”.
