Label TextWith her black western shirt and hat, Alexis Espie stands out as a steer rider, an atypical event for a woman. In the early days of rodeo, women competed in diverse events. These included bronc riding, relay races, and calf roping. There were far fewer female than male contestants, but the women did have an impact. Their roles in rodeo diminished in the late 1940s. Today, in the major rodeos, women compete primarily in barrel racing. Yet women are finding rodeos that are more inclusive. Women can use their skills to compete in rough stock and roping events.
