Label TextBlackshear wrote about this work. “For quite some time I have wanted to do a painting of a Native American Indian with an eagle perched on his arm. In the Native American culture we have all heard about Indian warriors having a spirit guide.” The artist said that an animal usually represented the spirit guide. That idea became the painting that this African American artist calls Brother Eagle. Blackshear noted how he depicted the subjects. “They are slightly overshadowed in the foreground with a bright background behind them. I painted this way so that if you squint your eyes the Indian and the eagle become more of a silhouette.” The artist explained that the silhouette represented the shape of the Indian and eagle becoming one in spirit.
