Label TextAfter completing The Birds of America, John James Audubon set out to document the four-legged animals that bear their young alive. With the help of his sons, he published 150 illustrations of American mammals in three volumes. The Rev. John Bachman coordinated text to accompany the pictures.
ProvenanceArtist. unknown [1]. purchased November 25, 1958 through (Nada Kramar, Washington, D.C.) by H.J. Lutcher Stark [1887-1965]; bequeathed September 2, 1965 to the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation; accessioned to the Stark Museum of Art | 1. In a letter dated Oct. 8, 1958, from Nada Kramar, Washington, D. C., from whom this set was purchased, she states: "This set comes from a descendant of an old New York family whose head was a personal friend of John James Audubon." (see Stark file 13-30, p. 14)
