Label TextThe Pima Basket follows a pattern Couse established in his paintings. He often portrayed an Indian near a glowing fire. Here the Indian contemplates examples of Native artistry in baskets. The romantic light of the painting and the quiet, contemplative pose create an idealized image of the American Indian. At the same time, the artist signals an appreciation of the creative work of Indian peoples.
