Label TextHenri, known as a social realist like John Sloan, painted his first Southwestern portraits in 1914 and said of his new subject, “I was not interested in these people to sentimentalize over them . . . . I am looking at each individual with the eager hope of finding there something of the dignity of life . . . .” In 1917 Henri painted Gregorita, a young Indian girl from Santa Clara Pueblo, in ten paintings. She was an inspiring model for his dramatic brushwork, bold color and strong articulation of form. Trips to New Mexico invigorated Henri’s art, and he encouraged Sloan to visit the region.
