Label TextCharles Marion Russell, who has become the epitome of a western artist, placed a self-portrait in this drawing of mules and wagons, traveling in a vast landscape. He looks back toward a scene that will soon be a memory. Charles Marion Russell drew this image as part of a letter to fellow artist Philip R. Goodwin. He told Goodwin about a two-week “fine trip” he took, riding along with a freight hauler. He characterized the freighter John Matheson as one of the last of his type.
