Label TextSeth Eastman was a military officer stationed at Fort Snelling, Minnesota Territory, in the years 1841-1848. Living near the Dakota and Ojibwa Indians, he was able to observe and paint scenes of their daily lives. In his painting of Indian women playing lacrosse he depicted a prairie fire burning in the distance. The clouds of smoke accentuate the action and drama on the field.
